Harry Ogden Whitver, 1912-2009

Harry Ogden Whitver, 96, of Maryville, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009 at the family home.  He was the first male registered nurse in the state of Iowa, and then later moved to Nashville where he had a long and fulfilling career in medicine.  Preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Gertrude Whitver; wives, Frances, Virginia, and Betty; five brothers, and one sister.  Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Fields of Nashville; son and daughter-in-law, Harry K. and Colleen Whitver of Nashville; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Ken Taylor of Maryville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Loretta Thompson of Michigan City, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.  At Mr. Whitver’s request, he was donated to the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University.  Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009 at Broadway United Methodist Church, Rev. Amy Probst and Rev. Ken Holder officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service at the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association (P.O. Box 409410, Living Legacy Partnership, Atlanta Ga. 30384-9410) or to the National Kidney Foundation (4450 Walker Blvd, Suite 2, Knoxville Tenn. 37917-1523).  Arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Maryville, Tenn. 865-982-6041.
